School of Chemistry, Biology and Materials Science aims at developing the students in the field of Applied Chemistry, Nuclear Chemical Engineering, Nuclear Fuel Engineering, Biology and Materials Science. The school consists of four departments in accordance with the relevant disciplines: Department of Applied Chemistry, Department of Chemical Engineering, Department of Materials Science and Department of Biology. We offer masters degree and bachelor degree programs in related disciplines. Presently we have about 150 post graduates and 1800 undergraduates studying in the school as of 2015.


Staff

School of Chemistry, Biology and Material Science has many excellent researchers and instructors including 26 professors and 44 associate professors with doctorate degrees or master degrees. Among them, there are winners of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and Most Cited Chinese Researchers. These researchers are committed to rising up the next generation of experts in the field.


Laboratories

The IAEA Reference Laboratory in ECUT is one of the five reference arbitration laboratories worldwide, equipped with ICP plasma spectrometer, atomic absorption spectrometry, atomic fluorescence spectrometry, high performance liquid chromatograph, gas chromatograph, micro electrochemical analysis system, Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS) and Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The lab has organized and participated in four sessions of the IAEA project-Hot Water Samples for Chemical Analysis Laboratory Comparison (1997, 1999, 2000 and 2003), and collected 1220 set of data, ranking the first out of 38 laboratories in 18 countries.

Established in 2009, Single Crystal Laboratory can produce a single crystal diffraction, powder diffraction, vapor adsorption, fluorescence instrument. It also carries out the research of magnetic materials and MOFs materials.


Research

Our researchers have published 300 papers in the international academic journals Twenty of them are classified as the first district of JCR. Moreover, fifteen monographs of science and technology, thirty invention patents and nine important nuclear industry standards have been achieved. Many achievements have won the first or the second rank of provincial academic prizes in natural science and technology. The related research achievements have been highly commended by Professor John B. Fenn, the winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. These achievements were also reprinted in Nature, Anal. Chem. TrAC, Chinese Analytical Chemistry as well as Chemical Communications.Some important outcomes were reported by C & EN (U.S), Chemistry World (UK), Technology Online (German), the German Pro 7 TV station, China Central Television, Guangming Daily, Jiangxi Daily, the Beijing Science and Technology News.


More than 350 research projects have been accomplished in these years. These projects are funded by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), Chinese National Programs for Fundamental Research and Development (973 National Program) , Bureau of Science and Technology for National Defense Industry, Bureau of China Nuclear Geology or Ministry of Education. With fully funded research, these projects are focused on the separation and enrichment of radioactive elements, geological disposal of high-level nuclear waste, as well as the treatment of radioactive environmental pollution, modern mass analysis, preparation and study of novel crystals.

Materials Science and Engineering


Introduction of the Subject

    Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) focuses on the composition, structure, preparation or synthesis as well as relationship between property and application of materials, devoting to performance and processing optimization of materials, development of new materials, and proper reasonable use of materials.

     The MSE in East China University of Technology (ECUT) is characteristic specialty of Jiangxi province. Since the first admissions of graduate students in 1993, the MSE in ECUT has gradually showed a hierarchical personnel training mode. The faculty is reasonable in echelon structure. There are 22 full-time teachers, including 2 experts of the State Council special allowance, 2 Jiangxi Gan Po 555 Talents Project selected candidates, 13 professors and associate professors, 11 research supervisors.

    The MSE in ECUT is featured in the development and application of functional materials, and is advanced in polymer processing. In the recent 5 years, our research was supported by 50 projects, including National Science Foundation of China, Science Foundation of Costind, International Cooperation Project of Ministry of Science and Technology, Provincial projects. 8 people are supported to present the international academic communications per year. To date, more than 120 papers were published, of which more than 60 papers were recorded by SCI, EI, and STP. Moreover, 4 monographs and 2 textbooks were published, and won Jiangxi Province Natural Science Award. Our department possess laboratory with the area of 1635m2, 589 instruments (total 12.19 million) and 8 off-campus practice bases. All these are strongcornerstones for the development and talent cultivation of MSE.

2 Research Fields

 (1) Polymer Materials

Polymer materials and engineering is a discipline about the design, synthesis, preparation, processing, and “structure-property” relationship of polymer materials. In this institute, we focus on the basic scientific problems of specific polymer processing (such as gas-/water-assisted polymer processing, micro-/nano-molding). The basic scientific problems include: modeling and numerical simulation of the process of gas-/water-assisted polymer processing and micro-/nano-molding, rheological behavior of polymer melt during processing, development of morphology and microstructure of polymers during processing, and property of the molded polymer products. Moreover, the processing of natural polymers (such as cellulose) is recently researched in this institute.

(2) Inorganic Materials

 Inorganic non-metallic materials engineering is a discipline about the basic theory of preparation, production process, composition, structure, and property of non-metallic materials and their composites. In this institute, we focus on the deep processing of mineral materials (such as phyllosilicate, bentonite, kaoline, etc), and the phase transition of the minerals during processing is studied in detail so that their microstructure can be manipulated for desired property. In addition to processing of mineral materials, we also focus on the application of mineral materials for the backfill and encapsulation of the nuclear waste.
